The main disadvantage of straw in relation to flax shives is that it can contain a lot of dust or fungal spores, which cause allergies in some horses, leading to respiratory diseases. This in turn can affect the horse's performance due to oxygen deficiency. The first sign of such a problem is coughing.
The disadvantage of sawdust is that it is difficult to get rid of it. It rots slowly and cannot be scattered on the ground. Wet sawdust weighs a lot, especially compared to straw. In addition, there is a possibility of foreign bodies in the form of small glass, nails or chips getting into it. Sawdust can contain chemicals that were used to treat trees, and this can cause skin irritation or hoof diseases in some horses.
Unlike shives, which contain air, sawdust quickly compressed, so sawdust bedding is not as warm as linen, and it is less pleasant to lie on. In addition, sawdust is mobile, so it is easy for a horse to end up on a bare floor.
